The Ancients (Dinovians).
Long ago, before the world as we know it now, the Dinovians existed. Called "the Ancients" by most present-day societies*, their ruins can be found everywhere, even within the dangerous Openings of the Styx. Before the Fall of Divalia, before other peoples even existed in the world, the goddess of the Dinovians, Archaen, waged war against the god Stygian. This violent battle between gods tore the planet apart in such a way that mountains rose and fell, lava erupted and filled the sky with acrid smoke, and seas rose and crashed upon the earth, lashing the world with huge storms and waves that struck and drowned anything that lived. Archaen, goddess of knowledge and light, led her chosen people, the Dinovians, to travel to the Barrow Realms to escape this turbulent war. When she finally pierced Stygian's heart with her spear made of light, he shattered into ten thousand pieces that still float in the world, occasionally opening cracks in his realm of mounds that the Taforalt elves call Stygian's Openings. The largest piece, blocked by Archaen's spear, exists only within his realm and became a source of great power for the Dinovians. Thus the Dinovians worship Archaen, but they derive their magic from Stygian, who is linked to their deity through his spear. Stygian is indeed a god of change and darkness, and everything he touches he modifies to suit his designs.
