Nurasa
Nurasa are penguins that come from southern Boondaburra. Their land is quite remote and few have ventured there. Despite this, the Nurasa are well known by the Boondaburras; the penguins have a strong seafaring culture and many of their sailors travel to Boondaburra for work, trade or exploration. It is said that there are more Nurasa in Boondaburra than in their homeland, although this has never been officially confirmed. The Boondaburra do not like to travel to their lands, as they are said to be lands of only ice, snow and seawater. Certainly, the many Nurasa who migrate are not eager to return, especially in winter.

Tilmun - Nurasa Navigator
Extremely grumpy and exceptionally skilled, Tilmun is the navigator and longtime friend of Captain Mushen. They entered the Navy together as young men and have remained close throughout their studies to this day. Tilmun graduated with honors and has an almost supernatural sense of direction, which he attributes to his Nurasa heritage. He is famous for leading the Ptarmigan to safety during one of the most violent storms of the century, without losing a single crew member. Despite this, he has been discarded for several prestigious positions because of his taciturn personality, which often borders on rudeness and insubordination. He and Mushen have an understanding born of their long relationship, but even they have disagreements from time to time.

Mushen - Captain of Boondaburran.
An experienced captain of the Boondaburran Navy, Mushen is a salty old dog with a self-critical streak. He has had many run-ins with the infamous pirate captain Siduri, who deserted the Navy in favor of fame and wealth, both before and after he changed his coat. As one of her former instructors, she never approved of his attitude and now regrets that he taught her anything seafaring. But he was still a good teacher and even he recognizes Siduri's skill. Despite being a consummate gentleman, he prefers his blunderbuss to a nobleman's sword. He is advanced in years and is not afraid to admit that he is not as fast as he used to be in close combat.

Namerin - Valet of Boondaburra
Dedicated to perfection and demanding only perfection from himself, Namerin is Captain Mushen's loyal servant. A lifelong companion of Mushen, he belongs to a vassal family of the esteemed captain and has been brought up from childhood to fulfill his duty as a right-hand man. Despite being a few years younger, his strict lifestyle and fortitude have kept him young and vigorous. A consummate professional, Namerin has never spilled a drop of tea despite the wind, storms, pirate attacks or other dangers present at sea or on land. Although he usually abhors violence, he has learned to use the sword to protect his lord and has become extremely skilled in duels. The crew may find him annoyingly fussy and correct, but they always trust him in a fight.

Hazi - Monkey Guard
Many Boondaburran ship crews are supplemented by intelligent monkeys. One example is the Monkey Operated Mortar, usually consisting of two or more monkeys who divide their duties between loading, aiming, and firing mortars and cannons at enemy ships. They are able to understand most basic commands and speech, but lack the ability to imitate them. Hazi has been with Captain Mushen for his entire naval career and has earned a position as the captain's personal guard. Smart and quick, he is quite lethal with the blank cannon and does not always stop to assess the situation before acting.

Boondaburra Underwater Corps
The Boondaburra Underwater Corps is an underwater strike force deployed by the Navy to disable enemy ships, sea monsters, and other aquatic threats. The untethered divers are self-propelled and have a variety of equipment and weapons. Some use large drills to destroy hulls and rudders from underwater, while others use harpoons to tie up or capture ships or monsters. Serrated swords are generally reserved for fighting sharks, clams, and other live fighters, as their utility against wooden ships is very limited.

Underwater corps generally work underwater, but can also be used as heavily armored troops on the surface. Metal diving suits are impervious to most weapons, including guns and swords, because they are built to withstand the immense pressure of diving. However, this is not a popular tactic, as the suits are rather heavy, ungainly and have very limited visibility. It is quite common to be thrown upright, and it often takes 3 or more Boondaburras to lift them. The Corps of Divers is composed almost exclusively of women, as male Boondaburras are usually too large to fit into the difficult-to-make suits.
